This family, expanding from their owned apartment to a rented 2,300 sq ft multi-level home with an ocean view, required indoor and outdoor solutions for a warmer, layered home with multifunctional spaces. Starting with a few key existing furniture pieces and artwork, we built a colorful story around the family’s collections.
Upon entrance, the first impression is striking yet refined, with large shapes in contrasting black and white, marked with a swathe of fiery red. The curves of ten ivory leather-wrapped dining chairs hug the profile of a large oval table, bringing balance under the futuristic chandelier with rounded repetition. Feminine but bold, the contrast of surfaces gives a foundational strength to the room. The guest room, just off the dining area, is a soothing retreat with soft layers and subtly shifting editions of artworks.
The large double-height living room became an eclectic space for the sophisticate - reading, cocktail sipping, and piano playing. Electric, deep, and ocean blues feature here, in a bespoke painted screen and curated artworks, grounded in grays and earthy neutrals, brightened by the defining double-height lookout windows. A structured new leather sofa and armchair were added to create the lounge, while a beautifully crafted black wall shelving unit expands across the main wall, serving as a library and bar, with an enclosed compartment within the unit.
The children’s bedrooms were each tailored to their individual personalities, with homeschooling spaces as a key area for each room. In one room, a built-in niche was created where a closet had once been fitted, optimizing view and comfort, with pops of color at the side of the headboard using a special wallpaper. In another room, fun elements like hand-dotted polka dots, a neon script night light, and soft blush linen curtains create a relaxing but upbeat tone for the young teen’s hangout and study areas.
The master furniture set was elevated with a luxurious carpet, a pale aqua textured wall covering, and fitted with ample storage for his-and-hers closets.
Finally, many unseen details were attended to, including rewiring, added sockets and compartments for appliances, a fully insulated outdoor shed for utility use, remote lighting switches, and retrofitted high-powered dimmers for a seamless technological experience in a 40+ year old building.
